Through twenty group portraits of "friends" from different professions and social classes, the modernization process of northwest China from the 1980s to 2025 is described - from the collective carnival of reform and opening up, to the disillusionment of the bubble economy, from the residual warmth of idealism to the era of mental aphasia.
