In the endless time loop, Yoji encounters Haruka and "The Setting Sun" every time on the bus, but always witnesses Haruka falling from the rooftop of a dilapidated building at the end of the loop. He only regained the memory of the previous sequence when the cycle failed. From the initial clumsy method of delivering books and finding a psychiatrist, he was still trapped in the cycle after tens of thousands of failures. The 21 minutes and 54 seconds when the broken pocket watch stops, the figure similar to Haruka in the library, and the red annotations that appear in the book all imply that the key to this redemption may never lie in "preventing the fall" itself.
