《Why Is the Young Lady Like That?》
During the second semester of her second year of graduate school, Song He’s advisor offered her a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study abroad on a government scholarship. Holding the recommendation letter her advisor had personally signed, Song He was torn and overwhelmed with conflicting emotions.
The program covered no tuition, only a one-time round-trip international airfare and a scholarship for living abroad. But when her advisor said, “I can help you sort out the tuition,” Song He was talked into signing what was essentially a contract selling herself into servitude.
Only afterward did she learn the truth. Her advisor’s close friend was a famous business tycoon, whose family had a wayward heiress planning to go abroad and polish her résumé before graduation. She urgently needed a trustworthy, honest person to keep an eye on her. Put simply, the young lady needed a lackey to follow her around.
As it happened, Song He was that lackey.
**
Nie Huan had always thought Song He was strange.
A bookish girl three years her junior, with delicate features but little interest in dressing up. She had kissed Nie Huan one day, then could only put on a cold face and act timid the next. A little teasing was enough to make her blush.
Nie Huan’s mother had sent Song He over to “keep an eye on her,” supposedly to “take care of her daily needs.” The bookworm moved in with her, becoming her lackey while also taking care of Nie Huan.
Only somehow, the roles were reversed.
When Song He got sick, Nie Huan went around calling in favors to find help.
When Song He was bullied, Nie Huan’s sympathy got the better of her and she stood up for her.
As she kept looking after Song He, this old tree that had never blossomed finally found her heart fluttering first. After living together for months, the two ended up in the same bed.
Naturally, the young lady had to be the one on top.
**
But this gave top student Song He quite a shock.
Song He: ?
Wait, why was she the one on the bottom? She was already a lackey, and now she had to be on the bottom too?
After becoming “bedmates,” the puppy’s worldview was refreshed day after day, opening up a whole new road before her. She shed her former icy demeanor. Whenever she saw Nie Huan without her manicure, she blushed uncontrollably, and a few careless words of flirtation from the young lady could easily make her willing and unable to resist.
Unfortunately, their “bedmate” relationship didn’t last long. Before Song He, newly awakened to love, could confess, Nie Huan vanished from her world as if she had evaporated into thin air.
The day she left, Song He clutched her ticket and gazed up at the gloomy sky. Alone, she wheeled her suitcase away and said goodbye to her humiliating twenty-fourth year.
They were never from the same world. She might as well forget her.
Maybe that was for the best.

Who could have guessed that three years later, while rushing to her advisor’s birthday party, she would run right into Nie Huan?
Damn it, the woman looked even better after three years. At thirty, she was at her most captivating, and her flirting skills had reached a whole new level.
Song He felt as if someone had stabbed her hard in the chest. Those vivid memories of the past and all that pain surged back at her.
Until finally…
Nie Huan’s hand trembled on her shoulder. Her eyes reddened, and all her usual swagger gave way to a humble plea. “Song He, let’s start over. Please?”
Song He lowered her eyes and said nothing.
There was a question she hadn’t been able to figure out in three years:
Why was the young lady like that?
A wealthy-family melodrama; an ex chases his wife into the crematorium, then the broken couple gets back together;
A poor puppy × a carefree rich heiress
(Advance warning: The author wants to see if she can write some steamy scenes, hahaha. I’m going to give it a try! \(•̥̑ .̮ •̥̑).:*・゚ If you’re interested, be sure to add it to your collection!)
Theme: Practice makes perfect. I’ll keep working hard on the story.
