The creation of "The Mystery of the Early Tang Dynasty" originated from my deep fascination with Wang Bo's stunning literary talent and tragic fate. Especially the eternal masterpiece "Preface to Prince Teng's Pavilion", in which the cry of "Be poor and strong, never fall into the clouds" has awakened me countless times when I deviated from my ideals and fled into the darkness. I long to write a legend about him and let his light penetrate history.
However, after I started writing, I found that Wang Bo's peerless talent and tragedy are more suitable as a footnote and spiritual symbol of an era, rather than the core of the narrative. As a result, the two characters Pei Jian and Gao Zian came into being. They seem to be two forms of light that I will always follow: Pei Jian is the idealist who goes forward without hesitation, firmly believes in procedural justice, and tries to correct the world within the rules; while Gao Zian is the wise man who understands the complexity of world affairs and has demons in his heart but still has the heart to help the world and silently protects him from far away. The two of them are both teachers and friends, complementing each other, and together they constitute my complete imagination of "Qingyun's Ambition" - it is not only Pei Jian's sincerity that cannot be tarnished, but also Gao Zi'an's perseverance after thousands of sails.
When reality repeatedly extinguishes the ideal flame, can I truly achieve "the ambition of being poor and strong, and not falling into the clouds" as Wang Bo wrote and as Pei Jian and Gao Zian practiced?
This is not only an inquiry into the past world through history, but also an inquiry into the current world with open eyes.
