As night falls, the streets of Lince light up with neon lights. The red and green lights reflected on the cracked sidewalk, like a faded stage set. The sound at the door of the bar shook the iron roof. Women on the street corner, wearing heavy makeup, leaned against the street lights and shouted softly. This is the busiest and most forgotten corner of Lima.
The first time I stepped into this street was on a sweltering Friday night. My Peruvian colleague who was traveling with me smiled and said to me: "Bienvenido, amigo, the real Lima is here." I instinctively pulled the collar of my shirt, feeling an indescribable depression and curiosity in my heart.
