Four-and-a-half-year-old Gu Xiaoman lost her mother young, hasn't seen her father in years, and now her aunt wants to give her away to another family.

Then a little crow named Wutuan tells her: the money and letters her father sent have all been hidden up in the rafters!

So her father hasn't abandoned her after all.

Xiaoman packs her little cloth bundle and sets off with Wutuan to find her dad. From then on, Qinglan Forest Farm has a little lucky charm who can understand birdsong.

The birds show her the way to trees full of hazelnuts; flocks warn her of rockslides so she can alert everyone. She sells the mountain goods she gathers and saves every coin in her money box, hoping to buy her dad a new padded jacket.

Gu Huaishan thought he would simply have to take good care of his daughter when he brought her home. But the little girl clutches her money box and solemnly declares:

“Dad, you take care of Xiaoman, and Xiaoman will make our family rich!”
