The winter of 1973 had yet to truly end on the Loess Plateau.
The wind swept up from the ravines, past the gray-yellow walls of Yuanxi County, past the low cave dwellings of Shijie Commune, and over the terraced fields stretching across Shuangshui Village and Hejiawan. The snow was light, and so was the rain. On days like these, people on the loess slopes still had to work the fields, haul manure, and worry about putting enough food aside for the year. In the county town, people still had to go to work and queue for grain.
Tian Runyao was never meant to belong here. He carried vague memories of that era, along with a lingering sadness over the fates of the characters in Ordinary World. Only when he stood on the loess slopes of Hejiawan and watched real people talk, toil, rejoice, and suffer before his eyes did he understand: the regrets in a book, when brought into reality, weigh as heavily as an entire lifetime.
He was no longer someone watching the story from afar. He had become part of it.
The loess slopes show no mercy. In their roughest way, they teach people to bow their heads, and in their silence, they teach them to stand firm.
But in the end, he was different from everyone else.
Still, changing one's fate has never been as simple as saying a few words.
This is not a story about someone rewriting the world out of thin air.
It's about a young man from a later era learning how to live amid the winds and dust of the Loess Plateau, and finding his place among family, love, friendship, and the tides of the times.
There is never a shortage of hardship in an ordinary world.
But ordinary people should never be defined by hardship.
This is the story of someone who returns to an ordinary world and, together with a group of ordinary people, strives to make their days shine.
I've read the new book and it's really good. The current plot is considered a prequel to The Ordinary World, right? Almost all the key characters have appeared, a bit like northern Shaanxi!
