Wen Wujiu is hauled onto the Name-Stripping Platform. The judge rules that he impersonated someone else and orders his name removed from the registry. Wen Wujiu immediately asks whose name he supposedly took, pointing out that the birth-name column in the register was blank. Then he pulls a servant's waist token from inside his collar and declares that it is carved with the name Wen Wuzan, not Wen Wujiu. He explains that he carved it wrong himself with a woodcutter's knife, and that the old man at the bookstall checked the characters for him: the name meant "the sun rising." By law, whoever removes the wrong name has to replace it themselves. The crowd below erupts in an uproar.
