Synopsis
At the New Year's Eve dinner table, my mother-in-law asked in front of everyone why I hadn't gotten pregnant in three years of marriage. I put down my chopsticks and smiled at Zhou Ye. "You should ask him." He kept his head down and shoveled food into his mouth without saying a word. By the end of dinner, I'd already picked the date for our divorce.
On the day we divorced, Zhou Ye was still putting on a brave face. "Without me, you're nothing." I tossed my wedding ring into the trash. "You're not even worth nothing."
The next day, I reported to my new company and opened the door to the director's office. My ex-husband's older brother was sitting inside, looking over my resume. Zhou Yan, the first love I'd dumped in college. We hadn't seen each other in eight years. He looked up. "Your marital status has finally changed back." I sat down. "Mr. Zhou, I'm here to interview for the director position, not to reminisce." He closed my resume. "I know. You used the same tone when you dumped me back then."
The whole company thought I'd gotten ahead by relying on my looks. My ex-husband came to cause a scene. "Bro, don't let her fool you. She's my ex-wife!" Zhou Yan pulled me behind him. "She's an employee now. What she becomes in the future is none of your business." When someone with connections spread rumors about me, he sent an email to the whole company and suspended them. He didn't even spare the person his own father had placed there.
Later, I learned that eight years ago his mother had come to me and told me not to hold him back from going abroad. I broke up with him, and he thought I'd stopped loving him. He waited for eight years, still keeping the eight-character message I'd sent him on his phone. He cornered me in the break room. "You didn't even call me 'bro' back then." Me: "...Bro." Him: "Say it again." Me: "Zhou Yan, have you no shame?" He pinned me against the wall and kissed me. "Would having any shame help me win you back?"
