[1960s] [Transmigration] [Animal Speech] [Rural Prosperity] [Marriage Before Love]
Su Maisui, an animal rescue worker in the post-apocalyptic era, opens her eyes to find herself a frail young woman in the Taihang Mountains in 1962, freshly jilted by her fiance. Her family has been out of food for three days, her five-year-old little sister is so hungry she's chewing tree bark, wild animals have destroyed most of the production team's wheat fields, and the entire Qingshigou Brigade is headed toward total crop failure.
She has no portable food supply or all-purpose pocket dimension. The only skill she brought from the post-apocalyptic world is the ability to understand animals. The price is that she can use it for only half an hour a day. Any longer, and she'll suffer splitting headaches and collapse from exhaustion. She has a mountain sparrow guide her to the wheat seeds swept away by a flash flood, a hunting dog track the footprints of grain thieves, and negotiates with a herd of wild boars for sweet potatoes from the barren hills. She turns her ability to talk into the eyes, ears, and radar of the entire village.
But success makes her a target. People in the county have their eyes on her reputation for "evil spirit communication." The real grain thieves lead to a web of corruption, and Gu Beichuan, a demobilized forest ranger, discovers that the mountain animals are fleeing south en masse, a portent of a natural disaster more terrifying than human evil.
On the night a wildfire seals off the mountain, hundreds of birds circle above the village, warning everyone of danger. Then the wolf pack that vanished three years ago arrives, carrying a bloodstained briefcase in its jaws. What's inside could bring down half the county.
Is she a fraudulent mystic, or Qingshigou's last hope?
