Five-year-old Chen Shande can't understand why her older sister is named Chen Shiyu and her younger brother is named Chen Shijing, while she alone is called Shande.
Her mother loves her older sister, braiding her hair beautifully and buying her pretty jewelry. Her father loves her younger brother, buying him crickets and taking him to banquets at restaurants. Shande alone has only Nanny Wang by her side.
Five-year-old Shande clutches the bird's nest soup she had finally managed to get and hurries toward her parents. It is the best thing she can get her hands on.
"Mother, Father, have some!"
If her parents drink the bird's nest soup Shande gives them, maybe they'll love her too and give her a hug.
Three-year-old Chen Shijing waves his little hand, striking Shande's hand squarely. The small bowl topples, and the warm soup spills over them both. Her little brother bursts into tears.
A pair of hands hurriedly shove her aside. Five-year-old Shande lands on the floor, watching her little brother cry as their father picks him up and soothes him.
"Chen Shande! How old are you? Why are you still so careless?"
Her little brother hadn't actually been scalded. He was crying because he'd been startled. Shande looks at the bird's nest soup spilled over her and her little hand, red from the heat. She wants to cry. She looks at her mother holding her older sister on the other side of the room, opens her mouth, and wants to say that she hurts.
But her mother only shakes her head. "You have no manners. Nanny Wang, take Second Miss away. Send her to the estate to reflect for a while, then bring her back to the manor!"
On the way to the estate, Shande falls off a cliff. Later, she finds a man at the bottom, half-dead. She keeps him alive by feeding him earthworms. The two stare at each other, and the man presses his lips together. "What did you feed me?" "Earthworms."
The great villain: Who the hell told this little brat that snakes are earthworms?! Damn it!!!
