When Fu Lanqing opened her eyes, she was shocked to find that she had become the villainess in a political intrigue novel about a woman disguised as a man.
The female lead had the power to turn the clouds and rain with a wave of her hand, like a character in an ancient version of Game of Thrones.
Fu Lanqing stared at the dilapidated hut, the stinking chicken coop, the broken pots and bowls, and... the man in bed whom she'd nearly smothered to death. Her strength gave out.
She suspected someone had set her up!
And the man was the male supporting character: her adoptive brother, who would one day become the immensely powerful chief minister.
In the original story, Song Sheng became utterly disappointed in his adoptive sister, embarked on a ruthless career in government, and ultimately brought about her death.
And so, a grand, if not particularly clever, plan came to mind.
She suddenly sealed Song Sheng's lips. When the man opened his reddened eyes and saw his adoptive sister making such a brazen move, his heart trembled.
"Brother..."
She smoothly dropped to her knees. When she looked up again, her eyes were timid and brimming with tears.
Song Sheng's breath caught.
That was when things started going wrong.
Song Sheng watched as the adoptive sister who used to beat and humiliate him at every turn slowly turned into a sweetheart.
When he needed to earn money, she cooked, did laundry, and raised chickens.
When he went to give lectures, she pawned her jewelry to buy him better clothes.
When he was injured, she tended his wounds with red-rimmed eyes.
She even announced that she would open a restaurant to support him.
Somehow, things that had been going badly suddenly started going well.
He didn't expose the fact that his adoptive sister had become someone else. Either way, they both shared the blood of his benefactor, so repaying her was no different from repaying them.
With her encouragement, he entered government service and rose steadily through the ranks.
After finishing his official duties, he went to take her home as usual.
But there she was upstairs, his dear sister leaning against his enemy, her cheeks flushed.
He had thought that shedding his country clothes and struggling to the very top would be enough to make him worthy of her.
What a pity...
Once everyone else had left, he cornered her beneath the bed curtains.
"Don't call out."
"Save your strength."
From the shadowed steps, he gazed at the bright moon, determined to seize its light and hold it in his arms.
