Instead, a bolt of lightning sends him through his tribulation and ascending to become a minor immortal. Summoned by the Heavenly Court, he inherits Celestial Master Zhong Kui's post and is sent to the mortal realm for training.
Little does he know that as soon as he arrives, he'll meet an immortal-realm nepo hire: Du Huanxuan. He appears to be an ordinary mortal, but is actually the reincarnation of the Martial Star, was born with yin-yang eyes, and is the designated successor to the God of War.

After a grueling year of hunting monsters, Wu Jian runs into another nepo hire. His hard-earned achievements are stolen, and he is once again made an intern. This time he is assigned to the God of Wealth's post, but his excessive generosity badly disrupts the market economy, so the God of Wealth sends him packing. He is then reassigned to the Matchmaker's post, but he was born without a thread of romantic feeling and keeps tying the wrong people together, so he is sent back again. Finally, the King of Hell, who has long been unable to find a successor, takes a liking to him and assigns him to an internship in the underworld.
The stubborn, unyielding minor immortal Wu Jian vows to earn an immortal position through his own efforts. With his own strength, he will transform the underworld into a modern city, complete with subways, high-speed rail, cars, and more, using an impressive record of achievement to break the Heavenly Court's unspoken rules.
After having his achievements stolen by nepo hires time and again, Wu Jian finally earns the position of heir to the King of Hell through his own ability and successfully inherits an immortal post.
