Everyone curses Su Yuanheng as a traitor who has brought the country to ruin.
Once a young general from a military family, he turned around and attached himself to the powerful minister Zhang Huaijian, taking bribes and framing loyal officials until his name was stained beyond redemption.
The court reviles him, the people despise him, and even his childhood sweetheart, Li Zhi'en, is consumed with worry at the terrible news that he has defected to the enemy, trapped as she is at a manor in Jiangnan.
But no one knows that he deliberately donned this cloak of infamy himself.
The nightmare of the white rabbit he lost in his youth is etched into his bones. He knows that in troubled times, to protect the woman he loves and their crumbling realm, he must first descend into hell.
He pretends to become a corrupt official, seizing power step by step as he secretly joins forces with the imperial clansman Zhao Yu and his trusted aide Chen Yi to set a deadly trap of breathtaking scale.
In public, he is the traitor everyone wants dead. In private, he endures a thousand curses, fighting to give his country and people one last chance to survive.
Li Zhi'en remains in her little Jiangnan courtyard, caring for her grandfather with her medical skills and quietly waiting for news of him.
Rumors spread everywhere, misunderstandings abound, and though they are a thousand miles apart, the two pour out their hearts to each other in secret letters.
When the flames of war die down and the coup comes to an end, an assassination staged with a faked death deceives the eyes of the world.
He leaves his irredeemable reputation to the history books, then sets off for Jiangnan, bearing a body full of wounds, to find the only light of his youth.
The realm is at peace, and the wrongful convictions are overturned.
At last, he lays aside his general's armor and leaves the court's intrigues behind. He and his beloved retire to the mountains, raise white rabbits, and spend their lives together with their children, fulfilling the promise of peace they made in their youth.
