1955: She Returns from America

Transmigration, rebirth, and a period novel / Scientific and technological development / A strong female lead / Heavy industry

1955, Luohu Bridge.

Lin Wanqing had only two suitcases. The most important things were not inside them, but in her head: twelve US patents, three degrees, and complete processes for everything from penicillin to carbon fiber.

In the United States, she earned fifty thousand dollars a year, owned a small house in Cambridge, had a private laboratory, and held an appointment from Princeton.

She gave it all up and returned to a country that could not even make penicillin properly.

Her political background was deemed "subject to controlled assignment." Her monthly salary was only a few dozen yuan. She lived in a dormitory building and shared a public restroom. Some called her foolish. Some called her a spy. Some said she would not last three months.

Thirty years later, China became the world's largest exporter of penicillin. The industrial system she helped build turned a medicine once worth more than gold into an everyday drug costing only a few dimes per dose.
