The third knock sounded, and the locked door opened by itself.
The thing outside was calling for help in the voice of someone inside the house.
The street had vanished, and the exit led underground. Xu Zhao had only gone upstairs to fix a door, but now he was trapped in the building.
Fortunately, the thing couldn't open the doors he'd repaired.
Xu Zhao discovered that he could restore objects damaged by ghost stories to their original function.
So while others barricaded themselves inside and waited to die, he went out with his toolbox.
Because he'd figured something out:
If a door can keep a monster out, it can also lock one in.
Fix a door first, then leave a way to survive.
By the time the monster realized something was wrong, the door behind it had already shut!
