Can a poor country boy make a place for himself at the steel mill?

As soon as Yi Yunping arrives at the courtyard house, Jia Dongxu mocks him: "You never even went to college, and you think you can take the technician exam?"

Xu Damao goes further, spreading rumors in front of everyone: "He must have peeked at the Soviet experts' blueprints!"

But when they confront him in the conference room, Yi Yunping pulls out the German micrometer his father left him and immediately points out a fatal flaw in the old blueprints.

The chief engineer is silent for three seconds, then slaps the table: "This is a technical innovation, not plagiarism!"

On the day of the workshop's test cut, level-seven worker Liu Haizhong sneers: "What does a young punk know about machine tools?"

Yi Yunping grips the feed handwheel. The metal shavings curl away in neat spirals, and the eccentricity is accurate to within two tolerance grades.

Director Yang announces on the spot: "A major merit award, and a fifteen-yuan bonus!"

Everyone is stunned. Jia Dongxu turns pale, while Xu Damao pushes his wheelbarrow along without daring to raise his head.

On that snowy night, Lou Xiao'e stands beneath the locust tree and presses a thermos of hot water into his arms.

"Big Engineer, if anyone bullies you again, I won't stand for it."

With this micrometer to measure up, who would still dare call him a poor relative who lives off others?
