No romance | Standalone case investigations | Realistic criminal investigation | Ensemble cast | Hard-boiled deduction
At Xingfuli Estate in the Chengnan District, a 78-year-old retired teacher is found dead in bed. His daughter rushes back from Canada, and the initial forensic assessment points to natural causes. Criminal investigator Lin Feng crouches beside the bed for a long time, then says, "He was afraid of the cold, but the blanket only covered him to the chest."
This is the first case in Volume One. The cases that follow include:
A 15-year-old girl jumps from a rooftop, with seven old scars on her wrist. A classmate hid her phone. After its data is recovered, the last message, sent ten minutes before she jumped, reads: "Can you delete the photos?" The reply is a single word: "Screw off."
A 28-year-old programmer dies by suicide using charcoal. His note says, "I was scammed." The precinct is ready to close the case, but Lin Feng insists on opening a murder investigation. He follows the money trail all the way overseas and takes down a gang involved in a case worth five million.
The four members of the major crimes squad:
Lin Feng, squad leader, formerly a forensic trace examiner. A man of few words, meticulous, doesn't smoke or drink, and never explains himself.
Zhao Xiaogang, tech nerd and data expert. Passionate and talkative, he only searched the top layer of the trash on his first dumpster dive, so Lin Feng made him search every trash can in an entire building.
Sun Li, forensic examiner, known at city headquarters as "One-Cut Sun." Her knife is precise, and so are her words. The dead don't lie. The living do.
Wang Jianguo, veteran detective with two years until retirement. He never pounds the table during interrogations. He likes to chat with suspects, and before they know it, they've let something slip.
No superpowers, no cheat codes, no mole, no revenge, no romance.
Just one thing: the dead don't lie, and they can't speak. It's up to the team to dig the truth out of the silence.
