"I've seen this scene before."
"I know the plot, so I know who is doomed. This time, I want to change one character."
Ye Yu was pulled into a screening room. The rule was simple: in every scene, he had to take the place of someone destined to meet their end. The watch on his wrist started counting down. This time, when the countdown hit zero, it wouldn't be his life that ended. It would be the day Squad Leader Shi Jin was discharged from the army.
The script gave him only one line, but he was allowed to change one character. Get it right, and time would be added to the countdown. Get it wrong, and the script would fight back.
At the hospital, a note reading "Thirteen days" was stuck to his sister's bedside. Every character he changed would give her another day to live.
And on a plank in the old storeroom, seven groups of scene numbers had been carved. The first six had all been crossed out. The last one was blank: Episode Seven, Minute Thirty-One. He looked down and saw that the handwriting on the carving was exactly like his own.
