Three-and-a-half-year-old Pu Xiaoman walked into the Veterans Service Center alone, clutching an old tin box.

She said her dad was missing and had told her to find “the people with stars on their shoulders.”

When the staff opened the box, they found no money, only thirty-six old objects of unknown origin.

A scorched button, a broken fountain pen, a watch without hands, and half an ID tag with a name on it.

Xiaoman lightly touched the button, and her eyes suddenly reddened.

“Uncle said his name isn't John Doe.”

“His name is Chen Wangsheng, and his home is at No. 17 Qingshi Alley.”

Everyone in the room stood up at once.

Because a missing persons file from seventy-six years ago recorded that very same name.

From that day on, the state established the Returning Geese Task Force.

A birthday card a narcotics officer never got to send, a family portrait a firefighter kept hidden in his helmet, a letter home frozen in a border guard's hands amid the snow, a young soldier laid to rest in a foreign land...

Xiaoman heard all the words they never got to finish.

Again and again, she reached out her little hands and brought the heroes' final thoughts back to their families.

Before long, everyone online knew the little girl who always carried a yellow satchel.

But no one knew that the last keepsake in the tin box belonged to her father, who had been missing for three years.

Pu Xiaoman wiped away her tears and held out her little hand to the soldier in uniform.

“This time, Manman will bring Daddy home.”
