In 1989, a shopping mall built on the water opened in Tuo County, Shandong. It became a sensation, and the crew of Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio once came to scout locations there.
In 1999, two of the mall's accountants mysteriously disappeared. The case was never resolved.
In 2010, the mall was demolished, and two skeletons were unearthed. The veteran police officer who had handled the case years earlier left a suicide note and took his own life. Three days later, a key witness was found floating dead by the dam.
Veteran detective Liu Jianjun launches an investigation with three colleagues: Song Yuan, a police academy graduate with a photographic memory; Chen Shi, an experienced veteran investigator; and Zhou Tong, a meticulous and serious policewoman.
The missing accountant, Zhou Xiaolan, left half a photograph with her aunt and said, "Wait until someone comes to you with the other half."
She waited for twenty years.
A chairman and his son, a corrupt police officer, a witness whose little finger had been cut off... Kidnapping and trafficking, prostitution, gambling, embezzlement, murder: the crimes of twenty years ago lie beneath the mall like the lake beneath it, deep and murky.
After poring through the case files, Song Yuan discovers that
Zhou Xiaolan gave the other half of the photograph to a man named "Song Ming."
Song Yuan's surname is Song. His father's name is Song Ming.
The water mall is gone. But justice must be rebuilt.
