The world has been in chaos for twenty years. One natural disaster after another, followed by man-made calamities, forced the Lu family to become bandits in the Northwest. In the end, they couldn't even keep that up. With six households and twenty-four people from their stronghold who were willing to flee south with them, they headed toward the newly established Great Qin.
Along the way, Lu Zhuang and the older generation held off pursuing soldiers. Seven fought a hundred, and they only managed to escape for the time being at the cost of three dead and four wounded.
Just as they began to settle in, they were attacked by beasts while dealing with their relatives' bodies. In the end, they drove the beasts away without bloodshed.
With four people wounded, the group tried to find somewhere quiet to recuperate. Instead, they ran into ill-intentioned refugees. Ready to die, Lu Zhuang led his son Lu Yuan and the younger generation in taking them down, then fled in disarray.
After resting in a mountain valley, the group went out to buy grain, only to be targeted. Drawing on a bandit's ruthlessness, they fought their way out of an encirclement by pursuing soldiers, local bullies, and refugees, then continued their flight south.
The group endured hardship after hardship before finally escaping their pursuers in the Qingshan Mountains, on the border between north and south. There, they put down roots and slowly built a home of their own.
