Lin Xiaoman, an orphan, found a black thread-bound booklet in the alley behind her welfare home. Three characters were stamped on its cover: The Villain's Ledger.
A line of small print on the title page read: "Write down a name, and the person will be judged. But the keeper of the ledger will also be judged by it."
She wrote down the first name. The person died. She wrote down a second name, and that person confessed to their crimes before jumping off a building. She wrote down a third, and that person buried themselves alive.
Every villain died by the very evil they excelled at.
But as the list of names grew, Xiaoman realized that the ledger judged more than just the people whose names were written in it. Every villain it judged revealed a corner of her own heart she did not want to face.
Greed, control, hypocrisy, selfishness, cowardice...
And the final name was her own.
This is a book about judgment: judging others, judging oneself, and judging everyone who struggles between good and evil.
