In 2008, the Haisheng Theater is set to be demolished.
The night before demolition, someone burns to death inside.
After Major Crimes Captain Liang Cheng’en takes the case, he soon discovers that the victim had recently been looking into an old case.
Seventeen years earlier, a fire broke out in the same theater, killing seven people.
Eighteen-year-old Mai Jiahao was found guilty of arson and sentenced to eighteen years in prison.
The evidence was solid, and there was a confession. On paper, there was nothing left to investigate.
But the deeper Liang Cheng’en digs, the more things seem wrong.
Someone says the back door was locked that night, but the case files don’t mention it.
Someone took photos at the scene, but they later went missing.
The original assessment of the fire scene doesn’t match the final report, either.
Worse still, the report bears a name he knows all too well: Liang Guodong.
His father.
Liang Cheng’en only meant to identify the charred corpse in front of him.
But as he investigates, he ends up unearthing the fire from seventeen years ago.
And the people who knew what really happened back then begin to meet with trouble, one after another.
This time, he’s investigating more than just the murderer.
He’s also trying to find out who sent an innocent man to prison seventeen years ago.
