Ancients Watch the Sky Screen: Who Pays for a Golden Age?

The sky screen suddenly descended upon the Myriad Worlds.

Qin Shi Huang, Emperor Wu of Han, Li Shimin, Zhu Yuanzhang, Cao Cao... They were all forced to watch.

Episode One: The Kaiyuan Golden Age. The official price of a dou of rice was twenty coins; on the black market, it was 120. A farmer worked the land for a year, and after paying taxes, had 240 coins left. His family was 7,000 coins short of what they needed for food.

Li Longji's lychees fell from his hands.

Episode Two: The tuntian system. Cao Cao's army got its grain from 1.2 million tuntian farmers in Xudu. They handed over 50 to 60 percent of their crops and remained hereditary serfs. After reading the report, Cao Cao wrote a single line: "In the tenth year of Jian'an, three tuntian farmers were removed from the register."

Three people out of 1.2 million.

Beneath the sky screen, emperors and ministers alike were left reeling.

Ying Zheng angrily hurled his jade seal: "A third of my people have been cut down!"

After watching the episode on the tuntian system, Liu Che asked Sang Hongyang, "How much better off are my people than Cao Cao's tuntian farmers?"

Zhu Yuanzhang sneered. "Yang Jian saved money, Yang Guang spent it. I'll give the money to the people."

The comments went wild.

"Blogger, your calculations are brutal!"

"They came, they lived, and they paid the price for the golden age."

"What's next? Grain supplies in the Three Kingdoms? Hurry up!"

The sky screen didn't stop. The golden ages had been tallied, and now it was time to count the cost of the times of chaos.
