The first time they met, she was a complete mess.
The second time they met, he proposed marriage. Since she was at odds with her family, he thought marrying her would make her easier to control and keep her from causing trouble.
"Captain, the madam's ship leaves today."

Later, he heard the ship had capsized that day, and no one had survived...
