In the eighty-third year of the Great Resurgence, ferocious beasts crouch beyond the towering walls of Zhenyuan Pass, while people in the city go to school and set up their market stalls as usual.
Lu Anye, a student at Linyuan No. 1 High School, awakens at eighteen and is found to possess a black stone martial meridian no one recognizes. His talent is rated F-grade, and his meridian is deemed useless. The major exam is only three days away. If he can't reach three-star Body Tempering, he'll be kicked out of the martial arts class, and his family's meager life-saving subsidy will be cut off.
With his aunt's husband's medicine bills weighing on him, he climbs into the buffer zone beneath the wall to scavenge scrap metal, where he encounters an Ironback Boar that should never have been there. Blood splashes onto his family's heirloom black jade pendant, and an old man awakens within it.
The old man's first words are that Lu Anye's meridian was misjudged, and if the Zhenyuan Bureau discovers what his body really is, they'll kill him on the spot.
From that day on, while others cultivate using beast cores, he has to grab his blade and charge into packs of ferocious beasts, killing them with his own hands and staking his life to grow stronger.
At school, the scions of powerful families wait for him to be kicked out. A female captain from the Zhenyuan Bureau investigates the deaths of two beasts, following the clues until they lead to him. And in the white mist beyond the city walls, something watches him through the night.
Lu Anye never wanted to be a hero. He just wants to heal his aunt's husband's leg and pay for his cousin's education. Once he becomes strong enough, his family won't have to cram into a drafty old apartment and fret over the cost of a few medicinal herbs.
Only later will everyone learn that the key to opening the Divine Suppression Institute, a place the Zhenyuan Bureau hardly dares to mention, hangs around the neck of this boy with the supposedly useless meridian.
