There are no superpowers here. No zombies. Just an engineer, a vehicle he built himself, and all the people it can't carry.
Lu Zhao wrote forty-seven pages of early-warning reports. He filed them at Level Three, and every one was "shelved for technical reasons."
He didn't argue again.
He took an extended leave and spent eleven months building a vehicle in the hangar of an abandoned iron mine.
Eight-wheel drive, forty-four tons. Mechanical primary drive with electric assist, powered by two independent systems. Fully enclosed, positive pressure, five-stage filtration, closed-loop life support, eighty-eight percent water recovery, and a six-circuit climate control system. Even when it was minus thirty-five degrees outside, it stayed at twenty degrees inside.
A house that could keep people alive for a year in the apocalypse. It just happened to have eight wheels.
There were only six seats on board.
And as long as those six people were alive, a machine had to keep running and producing heat inside the vehicle.
That's why the ash would come looking for them.
"There's nothing wrong with the vehicle. The vehicle was never the problem."
