In the second year of Jiayou during the Northern Song dynasty (1057), Bao Zheng was serving as prefect of Kaifeng, a post he held from the first to the third year of Jiayou. This book continues the unresolved cases from The Three Heroes and Five Gallants: about two years earlier, Prince Xiangyang's rebellion was exposed. The heroes broke through the formation, and Prince Xiangyang was executed. Bai Yutang, the Magnificent Mouse of the Five Rats of Hollow Island, died at Chongxiao Tower. That battle ushered in a new generation in both the martial world and the imperial court. The story begins at this point.
