Raised by a Powerful Minister, the Emperor Seizes His Power and His Heart

The night the late emperor died, Wei Junping knelt beside his bed and accepted an edict and a boy.

"Guard my kingdom for me."

He guarded it for ten years. He pacified the northern frontier, stabilized the court, and cleansed the bureaucracy, all while raising the child who used to clutch his sleeve and dare not let go until he was secure on the throne, ruling the realm.

Ten years later, the emperor took power into his own hands. His first imperial decree: strip the regent of his military command.

The court officials all said Wei Junping was greedy for power. They were right. He simply didn't want to hand over the reins, because once he did, he would have no reason left to stay by that person's side.

That night, the emperor pinned him against the dragon throne, eyes red. "Why didn't you fight back? You could have..."

Wei Junping replied, "This realm has always belonged to Your Majesty. Now I can finally rest easy."

A powerful minister's lot is a difficult one. The realm may be easy to defend, but the emperor's heart is hard to read. He taught the emperor how to seize power, yet forgot to teach himself how to escape unscathed from this forbidden love that turned the natural order upside down.
