When web novelist Lin Zhixia hit a writing block, she transmigrated to the Northern Song dynasty and met Shen Qingci, the daughter of a wealthy family. The two became friends. Later, when Shen Qingci was confined at home by her family, Lin Zhixia took her by the hand and brought her to the modern world.
Lin Zhixia's parents are divorced. She lives alone in a rented apartment and supports herself by writing novels. Shen Qingci has everything she needs, but is constrained by rules. Each woman is trapped in her own world in different ways, but they find an escape in each other's.
To help Lin Zhixia buy a house, Shen Qingci starts shopping between the past and present. To her surprise, it leads her to a very different life.
She objects to the Song dynasty's system of one man having multiple wives, and remains unmarried despite her family's urging.
Does Lin Zhixia eventually buy a home of her own?
Does Shen Qingci get her wish and marry a man who will take her as his only wife?
Only when her neighborhood is demolished does Lin Zhixia learn why she can transmigrate to the Song dynasty only from this rented apartment, and why she always arrives in the back garden of the Shen family estate.
