Xi Chi was an unlucky intern at the World Administration Bureau.
On his first mission, he mistakenly became the spiritual entity of his target, Fan Xunyuan: a tuxedo cat.
The System said that if the spiritual entity died, its owner would die too.
So Xi Chi diligently tried to get himself killed for two years, and finally succeeded.
After a nap, he returned in human form.
But more than a decade had passed in this world. The boy he once knew had become the East White Tower’s only Dark Sentinel.
The System issued another mission: eliminate Fan Xunyuan.
Xi Chi looked at his status panel, which read “Unknown beggar, no rank,” then at the major general who had just rescued him from the street.
There was no way he could win a fight.

Fan Xunyuan once had a very troublesome spiritual entity.
It was picky about food, always causing trouble, never listened, and loved leaving scratches on him.
Then it died.
For more than a decade afterward, he endured one psychic-sea rampage after another alone, eventually becoming a Dark Sentinel.
Until one day, he met a starving boy on the street.
The boy’s identity was unknown, and his origins were a mystery.
His face was completely unfamiliar, yet everything he did reminded Fan Xunyuan of the tuxedo cat that had long since disappeared.
So when the boy tried to run away from him, Fan Xunyuan locked him up.
This story takes plenty of liberties with Sentinel/Guide lore, but everything is explained and it won’t affect your reading.
