I went out to sea to clear my head, and our cruise ship crashed into a deserted island.

When I opened my eyes, I was the only one among more than twenty survivors who could fight, spear fish, and fix things.

The Japanese teacher tucked a talisman into my palm, letting her fingertips linger for two extra seconds. "I can only dare to live if you're alive."

In the middle of the night, the ER nurse slipped into my tent without a word and lay down beside me, her back against my arm. She didn't move, and she didn't leave.

The rebellious girl chased our boat for three nautical miles, then climbed aboard, soaked to the skin. She looked up at me. "Take me with you. Anywhere. Just don't leave me behind."

Me: "...I just want to make it home alive and see my girlfriend."

But they didn't seem to have any intention of letting me leave.

After we crossed the sea to a remote island in Japan, they wanted to keep me as their "breeding stock."

We drifted to Oceania, where a warlord wanted to recruit me as a thug.

When I returned to China, even my homeland had changed beyond recognition. The wanted poster had my name on it, and the reason read: "Naturally Adapted Individual."

Adapted to what? To a world growing more and more insane?
