Across the vast Five Domains, countless dynasties stand side by side. The protagonist's home, Qinglan Domain, is the least distinguished of the Five Domains, and its dynasties are divided into ranks. The Great Yan Dynasty is a third-rate power in Qinglan Domain. Its territory stretches for ten thousand miles, with sects controlling their own lands and great clans balancing one another. Martial arts and cultivation coexist. The Mortal, Spirit, and Heavenly Realms make up the dynasty's lowest levels of combat power, while the Saint Realm is the royal clan's pinnacle. The road to immortality is long, and talent shackles the potential of nine out of ten cultivators. The Zhang Clan is one of the Great Yan Dynasty's top clans, hereditary Lords of Zhenbei. For generations, it has commanded the dynasty's only regular cavalry legion and guarded the northern frontier's wild lands. The clan has deep foundations, but no top-tier Saint Realm cultivator. Before the dynasty's court and the sects of the domain, it has always been treated as inferior and kept under tight restraint.
