In this world, cultivators must leave behind a memory every time they ascend one abyss.
The higher they climb, the more completely they forget. The "immortals" in the First Abyss have long since forgotten their own names. All that remains is a beautiful, empty shell drifting among the clouds.
Shen Yan is thirty-four, a mapmaker on the frontier of the Sixth Abyss. Ever since an accident when she was twelve, she has been unable to forget anything. Not a single thing, from the age of three onward.
The Department of Memory Purification says it's an illness, and she needs treatment.
But as the seals of the Nine Abysses crumble inch by inch, as the forgetful drift through the sky like empty shells, and as everyone desperately tries to forget, she alone chooses to remember it all.
The Nine Abysses exist in the first place to seal away the person who remembers the most.
