Su Mo is an ordinary boy whose parents died when he was young, leaving him dependent on others. A spirit-root test declares that he has absolutely no talent for cultivation.
The girl he loves is taken away by an immortal sect because she possesses a Heavenly Spirit Root. From then on, they are separated as if by the distance between heaven and earth.
While herding cattle in the mountains, he slips and falls off a cliff. By chance, an ancient, unadorned jade pendant sealed away for countless ages lands in his hands.
He thinks he's found a fortuitous opportunity, but instead he stumbles into a sect and becomes a human furnace for alchemy, suffering endless torment and narrowly escaping death.
Everyone says that those without spirit roots cannot set foot on the path to immortality.
He is determined to defy fate and find another path in the depths of despair.
