The Fire of No Blame

In the south of the city, there’s a street called Old Alley.

At the end of the alley stands a shop that opens only late at night.

Its sign is made of old pinewood, painted black with gold lettering. After more than ten years of rain, the gold has peeled away until only two characters remain legible: Wujiu.

Wujiu means being good at making amends. It comes from the Commentary on the Appended Phrases in the Book of Changes.

But those who truly owe debts in this world never dare ask themselves: Can I make things right?
