Synopsis:
My roommate reported me for chanting spells, and my counselor gave me two choices: write a five-thousand-word self-criticism or move into the haunted, abandoned dormitory behind the school.
I chose the latter.
On my first night there, a blue screen appeared on the wall: "Welcome to Haunted Dorm. The Dream Hunters have awakened. Please lie flat in bed and start developing."
Lying flat really did help me develop. My coins increased every second, my bed could be upgraded, my door reinforced, and turrets built. At midnight every night, the Dream Hunters arrived on schedule. I had to hold out until dawn to survive.
On the third night, I went downstairs to look for a key and ran into four old ghosts from the Republic era playing mahjong. "We're one short. Just pay rent if you lose."
I won with a perfect hand of a single suit. As I pushed the tiles forward, I saw embroidered shoes floating beneath the hem of the qipao worn by the woman across from me. She had no feet.
"I win. You've lived here for seventy-two years. You owe me eleven million."
"The winner makes the rules."
Later, I discovered something even older sealed underground. The seal would collapse if even one of the four bronze artifacts went missing. Shen Yutang had sealed the underground with a bronze fragment, while Uncle Liu had been trapped in a stone chamber for seventy-four years.
On the day a construction crew came to demolish the building, I pressed the bronze plaque against the floor tiles. The whole building lit up: "Administrator privileges activated. Permanent residency confirmed."
My roommate asked when I was moving out.
I glanced at Shen Yutang, who was shuffling the tiles.
"I'm not moving. This building is mine."
