Hunting the Killer: No Forgiveness

Ning Changhai, a criminal investigator in Hanjiang City, sees his world collapse overnight: his wife, Lu Xiaoyan, is dragged into a car off the street, his father, Ning Xuewen, dies in a "car accident" that very night, and he himself is framed as a murder suspect and suspended pending investigation. Inside his father's padded jacket, he finds a note: "Case file 0723. The one from the mine twenty years ago. Dad found the person who signed off on it. Don't trust anyone in uniform."

An old mining disaster from twenty years ago that killed eleven people but was covered up as a three-fatality accident. A web spanning both the underworld and the authorities, stretching from a body double among the frozen corpses at the funeral home and a ripped-out page from the archive's visitor log to the pair of "eyes" inside the provincial public security department. With a thermos, a list of names, and a five-year-old daughter who can draw, Ning Changhai goes from "solving cases for the dead" to "finding people for the living". A cremation identification triggers a stunning reversal: the person who was burned was not his wife at all.
