Cyberpunk: the Last Ember

Night City doesn't kill people. It's smarter than that - it lets people walk in on their own. It gives rumors of a way out to the dying, gives the down-and-out a chance to become famous overnight, and gives the strongest an opponent to prove that "power has meaning." Then it watches them burn and collects what's left: names on the bar's drink list, legends printed on tomorrow's ads, corpses a background line in other people's stories. This city never creates despair, it just accurately converts everyone's hopes into its fuel.
