He Zhao is an ordinary clerk at a pharmacy in the old capital during the Republican era. He spends his days posing as an unremarkable apprentice to avoid suspicion, but in truth he has mastered a special art of wood-element alchemy. Keeping a low profile, he uses his work preparing medicine and pills as cover to pass along vital intelligence. Amid the streets and alleys tangled with competing factions, he uses his unique alchemy to avert one deadly crisis after another and gradually dismantle the enemy agents' hidden networks.
