Every Soul in Jiuzhou Has a Lamp
Every living being in Jiuzhou is born with a flame.
Humans call it the life flame, while demons have bloodflames and soulfire. The names differ, but their essence is much the same: they let living beings sense the world, hold spiritual energy, and prove they are still alive.
The life flame belongs to the living.
The life lamp does not belong to them entirely.
Three hundred years ago, the Hall of Heavenly Mandate established a lamp-inspection system throughout Jiuzhou, supposedly to treat cultivation deviations and prevent life flames from spiraling out of control. When a child was born, their name, bloodline, and flame nature were registered, then a lamp-testing stone assessed them from first to ninth grade. The higher the grade, the easier it was to enter a sect and obtain cultivation techniques and pills. The lower the grade, the fewer paths remained open.
Over time, first-grade lamps became servants, third-grade lamps entered the outer sect, and only those above sixth grade were considered worth cultivating. Ninth-grade lamps were seen as born strong. Marriage, careers, places to live, and even positions in the army gradually became tied to that lamp.
Life-lamp grade and cultivation realm are not the same thing. Grade is the talent assessment given by the lamp-testing stone; realm is the level a cultivator has truly reached. Those with low-grade life lamps are not absolutely incapable of becoming stronger. It is just that cultivation techniques, pills, and spiritual veins are usually claimed by those with higher grades first. Over time, a single test came to seem like an unchangeable fate.
The life lamp is also connected to a person's soul. When a cultivator is injured, the flame dims; when the soul falls dormant, the wick may remain unlit for a long time. Sects can use it to save people or find them, but they can also follow that same connection to seal meridians and draw out life flames. Objects have no good or evil in them; the person holding the lamp can decide where its flame burns.
Cultivation has eight major realms.
The First Realm: Kindling.
The Second Realm: Gathering the Furnace.
The Third Realm: Spirit Platform.
The Fifth Realm: Dharma Form.
The Sixth Realm: Heavenly Gate.
The Seventh Realm: Sacred Domain.
The Eighth Realm: Emperor Realm.
The rhythm is tense and the plot is continuous. It's great.
