Six-year-old An'an finds a wounded soldier in a tattered uniform at an old house deep in the mountains. He refuses the bowl of white rice she brings him, carefully wrapping the grains in his lapel. "Little girl, my younger brother hasn't had a meal yet." He looks up with bloodshot eyes and asks, "The future we're fighting to defend, will it let everyone eat their fill?" With reddened eyes, An'an turns on a projection, showing this nameless hero, about to return to a place of certain death, endless rice fields, the lights of countless homes, and trains crossing the sea a hundred years later. The young man smiles through his tears and heads back into the snowstorm. To save those most beloved people, An'an turns around and hands the mysterious courtyard over to the state!
