The Wanderer: the Last Incense

Xu Zhaolin relies on his ears to eat. He is a sound documentary collector, carrying a tape recorder and traveling around the countryside to record folk crafts that are about to disappear and the oral narratives of the elderly. Three years ago, his twin brother Xu Zhaochuan disappeared near the Baishi Town Reservoir. No one was found alive and no body was found dead. Three years later, Xu Zhaolin returned to Baishi Town to record the last dictation of an old man. There was an extra piece of breathing sound in the recorder that didn't belong to anyone. He followed the sound to an old pump house next to the reservoir and discovered the last place his brother went before he disappeared. As the investigation deepened, Xu Zhaolin discovered that the voices of six people who died in the reservoir accident eighteen years ago had been artificially edited and rearranged. Behind every recording, there is an erased name. He wanted to know where his brother had gone. But those voices seemed to be looking for him too - the shoes turned on their own, there was an extra breath in the room, and a fourth person's voice appeared on the tape. Xu Zhaolin began to understand that some sounds were not meant to be recorded. It is used to warn the living.
