Ruan Xingheng, an ancient book restorer, obtained a fragmented volume with no title, no author, and even no complete pages during a local document rescue. The book is not afraid of water, but uses rain as ink to reveal the erased words. The volume records a "Heshuo Spring Flood" in the last years of Xining in the Northern Song Dynasty that has been omitted by official history: seventeen water stations were on fire at the same time, and 30,000 refugees were missing. However, the report received by the court only said, "The water has calmed down."
Ruan Xingheng tried to fill in a missing word, and the fragment suddenly unfolded into a road leading to ancient times. He did not fall into the palace, nor did he become a son of a famous family. Instead, he woke up in a dilapidated copy shop beside the old path of the Yellow River and became an unknown copyist being traced by the government. There is only a copper seal with half a post order engraved around him, and a book called "Heshuo Shuiyi Lu" that changes its contents according to reality.
In order to return to his own time, he must follow the broken pages of ancient books and walk through the 800-mile Guan Mountain to find out the real cause of the spring flood: was it a natural disaster, or did someone deliberately let the dike burst and let a secret road connecting the military town and the capital disappear under the water? Every time a page is repaired, a piece of history will appear in the book; every time a word is changed, a person will be lost in reality. Ruan Xingheng gradually discovered that the ancient books did not send him into the past, but used his hand to find a person who had never been written into history.
