In Linqi City, an office building with only thirteen floors has an elevator that stops on the fourteenth. Witnesses say the floor exists, and surveillance footage and old records have begun to back them up.
Zhou Shu, a forensic examiner of electronic data, discovers that once eyewitness testimony, physical evidence, and digital evidence form a closed loop, an absurd proposition gets written into the "factual record" and becomes a deadly reality. He can only submit reproducible counterexamples under his real name to narrow the rules. If he gets one wrong, he'll be the first to face the consequences.
Li Su, who is in charge of sealing off the scene, refuses to let him use other people's lives as experiments, and won't watch him stay alone in danger. The two rescue the missing person from the fourteenth floor, but find seventeen drafts in a cabinet, each describing something that has yet to happen, and each bearing Zhou Shu's signature. The next one says that someone mentioned in an emergency call recording will lose the right to be remembered by anyone.
The recording has already been played at the emergency call center. Why does the blank staff badge bear the number seventeen?
