The Biggest Troublemaker in the Cultivation World

A proper cultivation world, with sword cultivators, alchemists, talisman cultivators, body cultivators, sects, secret realms, demonic cults, demon beasts, ascension, the Heavenly Dao, and tribulations of lightning. But the laws of the world developed a bug: starting three thousand years ago, the criteria for judging a "Dao Heart" became very strange. Cultivators who were conventionally pure of heart and desire, and weighed down by grief and hardship, were more likely to suffer cultivation deviation. Meanwhile, those with clear Dao Hearts, relaxed minds, and even a few screws loose advanced at breakneck speed.

The major sects are deeply secretive about this. They still uphold the stereotype that cultivating immortality requires severing all love and desire, while the sect masters secretly research "how to be properly improper."
