Synopsis

An unsigned letter leads Lu Jing, a special police instructor, to a deserted village that has been erased from the map. At the bottom of a well, he finds records of Japanese military experiments from 1939. That same night, he encounters something that should not exist: mutated people who move sluggishly and have black blood. He escapes by sheer luck, but an undying black pattern remains on his left arm. The hexagonal particles in his blood sample match the investigation notes of Li Zhiwei's late father exactly. The two form a team and follow the circular snake totem, from Rustgate Stockade to the underground warehouse in Graymire Town, then to the secret passage deep beneath Hollow Village. Each deserted village is a transfer hub for a research institute from the War of Resistance against Japan, and every route ultimately points to the same coordinates: Babel Island. At the end of the passage, Lu Jing finds the remains and notebook of his grandfather, Lu Chengshan. A translator designated “09,” he was executed for witnessing too much. More troubling still, the entire network remains active to this day. The man who established and maintains it is Lu Huaizhong, Lu Chengshan's nephew. He changed his surname, and eighty years later still controls the route from Yunyin Mountain to the island. Lu Jing puts his grandfather's glasses in his breast pocket and returns to the city with the testimony of the mountain spirit, the transport manifests from Rustgate Stockade, and the family letters from Graymire Town. There is enough evidence to make waves on the international stage, and a joint expedition is officially approved. The next stop is the island in the sea. There, they will find people kept in suspended animation, buried evidence of crimes, and the final unbroken link in a chain stretching back eighty years. The night before they set out, Li Zhiwei tells him, “I'll guard the door for you.” He replies, “Then I'll keep my promise. I'll definitely come back.”
