A Taoist priest comes down from the mountain with almost nothing: an old inkstone, a worn-out brush, and a purple-gold gourd filled with wine. Yu Chen is the most gifted member of his generation in the Taoist sect, but he is a bit of a slacker: if he can lie down, he won't sit up, and if he can drink wine, he won't touch tea. Tired of him doing nothing but sleeping and drinking all day, his master kicks him down the mountain to experience the mortal world and, while he's at it, find his senior brother Lin Yuan, who was driven out three years ago. Before the brothers can catch up, they get pulled into a strange case: the coffin of Old Master Zhao, whose funeral is being held in the eastern part of town, refuses to budge. One bizarre incident after another follows: a family of four sleeps on the floor every night in their newly built villa; three girls vanish one after another from an old apartment building; and a nameless mountain cave hides finger bones buried for a hundred years. As they solve cases and hunt ghosts, their group grows livelier by the day: Lin Yuan, the mature, dependable, secretly flirtatious senior brother; Tie Xinlan, the decisive captain of the criminal investigation squad; Su Wanqing, gentle and reserved; Jingkong, a stubborn little monk; and a mysterious white fox of unknown origin. People walk through the mortal world, while ghosts move in the shadows.
