In the rural Guanzhong region in 1982, Zhaodi is the eldest daughter of a family with no sons. Everyone in the village says that with six girls in the family, sooner or later someone will take everything they own.
Zhaodi is reborn, and a book called the East Courtyard Ledger appears in her bag.
Break off an engagement: ledger +50.
Shut down the gossip: ledger +100.
Put her younger sisters through school: ledger +200 every month.
A noodle shop opens, a tailoring business gets underway, and cotton is bought and resold. Three years later, each of the six sisters has her own path to prosperity, and half the shops in Guanzhong bear the Zhou name.
Zhou Dehou squats beneath a persimmon tree, smoking. Everyone in the village has started calling him Master Zhou.
Six daughters, six bookkeepers. In this life, the family line will carry on by their own hand.
